Located in the Oregon coastal community of Reedsport, this well planned center attracted such a demand for space that the owners started expansion plans before the structure was completed. Situated on a four-acre site, shopping center has a floor area of 28,000 square feet with additional 12,000 planned. The parking area accommodates 180 automobiles. Flexibility of rental space was a major consideration in the design of the building. To permit adaptation of floor space to tenant requirements, 7" x 26" West Coast Douglas Fir glue laminated beams of 45′ and 47' span the width of the building. These are supported by glue laminated posts 7" x 75%" ranging in length from 122' to 152' spaced 15' o.c.

Interior wall partitions are 2" x 6" Douglas Fir covered with various wood panelings to form attractive backgrounds for merchandise displays. The exterior walls are framed with 2x6s and the roof joists are 2x10s.

Soffits for the building and the covered walkway are built with 3" x 6" West Coast Hemlock decking shaped into a modified folded plate design. Posts supporting the 4" x 12" solid beams are made of two 2" x 6" with short lengths of 4" x 4" inserted between the two longer pieces. Fascia boards are 2" x 8" Douglas Fir. Exterior siding is 1" x 8" Western Red Cedar.

A homelike atmosphere replaces the customary institutional appearance in this Oregon convalescent hospital constructed with versatile West Coast Lumber. The adaptability of wood to the design objective also produced lower cost.

The 76-bed nursing home is built on a framework of West Coast Douglas Fir-2" x 4" and 2" x 6" wall framing and 2" x 8" rafters. Included are 20 two-bed and 12 three-bed rooms, two day rooms, two nurse stations, dining lounge, kitchen and a fully equipped laundry. Total square feet of floor area is 16,464.

A two-hour fire-resistant rated wall, composed of two thicknesses of 5/8" sheetrock applied to a framework of 2" x 6" West Coast Douglas Fir, separates 5,200 square foot units of the building. Exterior masonry at the firewall points satisfies a requirement for extension of fire protection the width of the eaves from ground level.

Colorful stains, applied to 1" x 8" Western Red Cedar tongue and groove siding, offer bright, gay accents. Soffits and the underside of the entrance are covered with 3/4" x 10" cedar bevel siding.

Economy, one of the requirements of this convenient, efficient nursing home, was achieved by a shortened construc- tion period and use of readily available, easy-to-use materials. Results were evident in a lower per-bed cost, and in the fact that owners received patients sooner, and began to receive a return on their investment in a shorter period of time. Similar structures have been built for nursing care and are operating in Texas, Utah, California, Oregon and Washington.

With the future in mind, this tax-supported district hospital in Bandon, Oregon is designed to grow with the communities it serves.

The heating plant, storage rooms and ambulance entrance are grouped along the street and parking area. This section also serves as a sound barrier. The surgery, laboratory, X-ray and other service rooms are located between the street side area and the 20- bed wing that extends 177' along the bluff above the ocean, affording a spectacular view for the patients. The main entrance to the waiting room and administrative offices is reached via a covered walkway through the court from the street.

Since the building is subjected to constant salt air spray, low maintenance was a materials selection factor. The architect specified 1" x 4" tongue and groove Western Red Cedar siding applied vertically. A bleaching agent was used as an exterior finish to accelerate the natural weathering of red cedar to a silvery gray color.

Framing for the entire hospital is West Coast Douglas Fir in sizes of 2" x 4", 2" x 6", 2" x 8" and 2" x 10". The roof is 1" x 8" fir shiplap applied diagonally on 2" x 10" joists. The low per bed cost for this hospital is the result of sound planning and taking ad- vantage of the economies provided by frame construction. A design idea that utilizes the full commercial advantages of distinctive shape has been accomplished at no increase in cost over conventional forms with this interesting courtel office-restaurant in which West Coast Lumber is the principal building material.
